Driving westbound on the I-70 past Glenwood Springs on Sunday morning, a 19-year-old woman lost control of her Honda Civic and rolled over several times, ejecting her baby who was killed on the spot. The mother was taken to a nearby hospital with possible serious injuries.

According to 9news.com, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) does not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash and indicated that while the child was in a safety seat, it was most probably not properly restrained.

Commerce City Police have identified a woman who was killed Thursday in a roll-over accident as twenty-one-year old Yoana Rodriguez of Aurora, according to 9news.com. A Colorado Springs man was killed when his Chevrolet SUV rolled over east of Calhan near Ramah highway. The driver was apparently alone in the vehicle, and the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Driver Fatigue Contributes to Colorado Car Crashes

Two Injured in Colorado Springs Rollover

A serious Colorado Springs car accident occurred on Friday, June 11, 2010 injuring two male teenagers. The Colorado Springs police said this crash was a single-car accident that resulted in a rollover on Interstate 25. This early morning car crash caused traffic delays for the morning commute as southbound lanes of traffic were closed for several hours.

Authorities have stated the two teenagers were traveling southbound on I-25, south of Fontanero, when they lost control of their car. Witnesses stated it appeared that the car was speeding and weaving in and out of other vehicles when the driver lost control and flipped the car.

Rikky Miller, the 19-year-old driver, sustained minor injuries, and Michael McElroy, the 18-year-old passenger, was ejected from the car during the rollover and suffered severe injuries. McElroy was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where an emergency surgery was conducted, and he is still in critical condition. Both driver and passenger are residents of Colorado Springs.

Police know that speed was an issue in this Colorado Springs car crash. They also suspect drugs and/or alcohol were factors in the crash, but they are still investigating this theory. Miller was charged with vehicular assault resulting in injury.

Two Injured in Pueblo Motorcycle Accident

At approximately 1:35 p.m., on June 7, 2010 a single motorcycle accident occurred in Pueblo, CO injuring the driver and passenger. Colorado police stated the crash occurred in the 3800 block of Thatcher Avenue near the Elmwood Golf Course entrance.

Authorities said a 2009 Chevy Malibu and a 2010 Toyota Camry were stopped at a red light when the motorcycle came up on them from behind. It appeared the driver of the motorcycle lost control of his bike and tried to avoid crashing into the cars at the stop light and the pedestrians in the crosswalk.

A 53-year old male driver from Kansas and a 42-year-old female passenger from Pueblo were thrown from the motorcycle when the bike slid. They were taken by ambulance to Parkview Medical Center for medical care. The driver was treated for minor injuries, but the passenger sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition. Their names have not been released.

The pedestrians and drivers and passengers in the other vehicles were not injured in this Pueblo motorcycle crash. Westbound lanes of traffic on Thatcher Avenue were closed for a short period of time in order for police to conduct an investigation, but the accident investigation has not been concluded at this time.

Colorado Springs Truck Rollover Closes a Portion of I-25

On May, 18, 2010 a rollover crash occurred in Colorado Springs involving a semi truck near North Academy. This Tuesday afternoon crash affected traffic in both directions on Interstate 25.

The Colorado Springs police said the semi truck was headed southbound on I-25 when the truck driver lost control and hit the median causing a rollover crash. Officials say the accident occurred between the exits of Briargate Parkway and North Academy southbound.

Police closed all southbound traffic lanes and diverted traffic around the accident by using the merge lanes near Briargate Parkway. They also shut down the left lane on I-25 northbound due to the center median damage. Officials said the accident caused southbound traffic to backup for approximately five miles and the northbound side was backed up for over a mile.

The afternoon commute was a mess, but by 6 p.m. the southbound lanes were reopened, however one northbound lane still remained shut down in order for the Colorado Department of Transportation to repair the center median.

The truck driver’s name has not been released at this time, or any word of injuries. The cause of this crash is still to be determined.

Colorado Motorcycle Trend Increases in the Over 40 Age Group

Whether it is commuting to work or a new found joy of weekend riding and love of the open roads, motorcycle riding among older riders in Colorado has boomed in popularity. Most people have the conception that young people are the only ones who enjoy riding motorcycles; however, motorcycle riding has started growing in popularity with older riders as well.

Riding is liked by a more older and affluent crowd and has increased as a hobby or past time sport in the last several years. In fact, motorcycle sales across the nation hit a record high in 2004 with over 1.1 million bikes sold. Of course not all of the bikes sold were purchased by older riders. Although during that same year, 46 percent of riders over the age of 40 were killed in motorcycle crashes nationwide.

These numbers show a direct correlation between the increased amount of sales and the increased number of fatalities among the older age group. This is true of motorcycle riders in Colorado as well. In 2005, the 45 to 54 age group had the highest number of deaths from motorcycle crashes in Colorado which accounted for 21 of the 87 fatalities.

Fatalities among young riders have decreased as they have increased with older motorcycle riders. During those same years, deaths dropped from approximately 50 percent to 32 percent for the under 30 age group.

Colorado Springs Rollover Sends One to the Hospital

A truck was traveling eastbound on Austin Bluffs Parkway when it lost control and rolled. This Colorado Springs rollover crash took place on June 1, 2010 near Union on Austin Bluffs Parkway.

After the truck rolled and came to a rest, a witness ran over to the driver and helped him out of his vehicle. The witness smelt gasoline and walked the driver approximately 20 to 30 yards from the vehicle to safety. The male driver broke his leg and was taken to the hospital for his injuries. He is expected to survive and make a full recovery.

Colorado police said the bed of pickup truck was overloaded and filled with scraps and metal. The cargo spilled on the roadway causing eastbound lanes on Austin Bluffs Parkway to be shut down for over an hour for cleanup. The vehicle was a green older model pickup truck driven by a man in his 60’s. Police indicated that the driver was going too fast for these conditions and will most likely receive a ticket. His identity has not been released.

Army Soldier Dies in Colorado Springs Rollover

On May 30, 2010 a deadly accident occurred when a single-vehicle accident and rollover occurred in El Paso County involving a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup truck. The Colorado Springs car crash occurred on Bradley Road, just east of Marksheffel Road late Sunday night.

The Colorado state troopers said the male driver was traveling west on Bradley Road when the vehicle veered off the road a little before midnight. The driver appeared to steer back on the road, but over-corrected the car and lost control. Authorities indicated that the vehicle rolled over twice before coming to a stop.

Unfortunately, the driver was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during this crash and died from his severe injuries at the scene. The man was identified as 28-year-old John DeLong, an Army sergeant stationed at Fort Carson. He was a veteran of the Iraq war and was schedule to deploy again.

An investigation is being conducted as to why the soldier lost control of the vehicle. Police do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in this crash.

Two Injured and One Dead in Peyton Crash

On Wednesday, May 12, 2010, a fatal car crash occurred in Peyton, Colorado. Just before 6 p.m., a two-car accident occurred at the intersection of Jones Road and Curtis. Colorado State Police said the car crash was caused from one car failing to yield at the intersection.

Officials said one man’s vehicle was struck by another car because he did not yield the right-of-way. Sadly, the unidentified man died on scene as his seat belt was not fastened at the time of the accident. Colorado Police have yet to release the victim’s name.

This fatal car crash in El Paso County also injured the driver and the passenger in the other vehicle. Police said 19-year-old Tiffany Borchert and 18-year-old Richard Dillard both sustained severe injuries. Borchert from Colorado Springs and Dillard of Calhan were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. Police said their injuries are not life threatening.

The Colorado State Police are still investigating this Colorado car accident.

Semi Truck Rollover Shuts Down a Portion of I-25

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, at 3:40 a.m. police found a semi-truck on its right side off the west side of Interstate 25, near Motor City. Colorado Springs police arrived on scene shortly after the accident, and said the truck accident occurred at mile market 140, just south of Cimarron Street.

Police said the truck was carrying 10 new vehicles and was traveling southbound on I-25. It appeared the car carrier truck went off the side of the Interstate and into a drainage ditch. The semi rolled over and came to a rest on its right side.

The semi-truck driver, whose name has not been released, was treated for minor injuries and released. Colorado Springs police have ticked the driver for careless driving. They do not believe alcohol, drugs or speeding contributed to this truck crash.

No other drivers or vehicles were involved or injured in the single truck accident near Colorado Springs. This truck accident did shut down a portion of the Interstate. In fact, the two right lanes of southbound I-25 were closed for several hours allowing police time to finish their investigation and to give crews time to clean up the wreckage.

Colorado Springs Child Hit by SUV

On Monday, May 3, 2010 at approximately 4:45 p.m., a five-year-old boy was hit by a SUV in front of his home in Colorado Springs on Audobon Drive, near Airport and Academy. Police say King, the little boy, was riding his tricycle in his driveway and into the street where he was hit.

The driver attempted to stop the vehicle once she saw the child in the street, but it was too late. After the driver of the SUV struck the child, she carried him to his parents. T.C. Obermuller, King’s mom, said everything happened so fast. She is not blaming the driver for this accident. Obermuller had been teaching her son not to play in the street.

King suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital as a result of this horrible accident. He ended up having a broken leg and had to undergo surgery to repair it. He also received a road rash from the accident. Fortunately, his injuries are not life threatening so he will be able to make a full recovery in time.

The boy’s parents aren’t filing any charges against the driver, and the police are not citing the driver for any traffic violations since the driver was not impaired and it was purely an accident.

Two Seriously Injured in Colorado Springs Motorcycle Accident

Just after 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, a motorcycle accident occurred in Colorado Springs that left a portion of Academy Boulevard shut down for approximately three hours. The motorcycle driver Jerry Hayhurst and passenger Janice Hayhurst were ejected after the motorcycle crashed on its side.

Police said it appeared the driver was traveling northbound on Academy Blvd, approaching Hancock Expressway when the driver lost control. Neither the 57-year-old male driver nor the 50-year-old female passenger was wearing their helmets or any safety gear.

The married couple resides in Colorado Springs. Both were seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. Police last reported that Mr. and Mrs. Hayhurst were both in critical condition after sustaining severe head injuries.

Police are still investigating if alcohol could have played a part in this horrific accident. No conclusive evidence has been made as the investigation is still open.

Deadly Colorado Rollover Crash on I-25

On Wednesday, May 5, 2010 just after 8:00 a.m., a deadly two-car crash occurred on northbound I-25 that left it closed for over two hours. Colorado State Patrol closed the interstate in both directions because they had to land a medical helicopter on I-25.

Police said that a 30-year-old Shaun Smith of Pueblo was driving a Toyota Tacoma north on I-25 near the area of Security-Widefield and stopped for traffic when 22-year-old Daniel Woldtvedt in a Subaru Legacy rear ended him.

The Toyota hit the center median and rolled over, followed by the Subaru which also struck the center median. Investigators stated the Subaru was traveling fast and failed to slow down. They believe the accident may have been caused by distracted driving in Colorado, as Woldtvedt was using his cell phone at the time of the collision.

Smith was also traveling with a baby in the rear of the Toyota. Thankfully, both the driver and infant were not seriously injured. Both were taken to the hospital and released. Sadly, Daniel Woldtvedt of the Subaru was taken by helicopter to a Colorado Springs hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation of this two-car rollover is still open, but police have ruled out alcohol or drugs as factors.

Colorado Springs Woman Died in Vehicle Rollover

On April 24, 2010 a Colorado Springs women was ejected from her 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by her 40-year old husband Richard Tolleson.

The couple from Colorado Springs were driving east on U.S. 24, about 20 miles from Lake George in Park County when their vehicle went off the road. According to Colorado State Patrol, their SUV went off the right side of the road, down an embankment and overturned at approximately 10:15 p.m.

When police arrived on scene, they found passenger Colleen Tolleson lying off the road with serious life-threatening injuries as she was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled. Both the driver and 30-year old woman were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

The husband and wife were airlifted to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs for treatment. Sadly, the wife died on Sunday from her injuries; whereas, the husband was treated for minor injuries and released.

The husband was arrested for careless driving, driving without a license, driving under the influence and suspicion of vehicular assault, and is now facing charges. The state patrol is investigating the cause of this Colorado car accident, but they believe alcohol was the primary factor.

On April 1, 2010 KKTV reported a car accident in Colorado Springs on North Chestnut Street and Vondel Park Drive. The police officers that first arrived on scene suspected that speeding and alcohol may have been factors in this accident and involved the Major Accident Unit to investigate this crash for a possible DUI offense.

Witnesses reported that the 2003 Saturn was going approximately 60 MPH in a 30 MPH zone. The investigation concluded that the vehicle was speeding while traveling south on Chestnut Street and lost control sliding into north bound lanes and forcibly hit a guard rail.

The female driver, front passenger and child were all taken to the local hospital for evaluation and treatment. It appeared the passenger was not wearing her seat belt and hit her head on the front windshield, seriously injuring her face. The child was sitting in the back of the car in a secured car seat and is being evaluated for possible injuries.

New Cell Phone Restrictions for Colorado Drivers

Bus Driver Injures 12 and Kills Two in a Denver Auto Accident

A Denver bus driver ran a red light, slamming into a Volkswagen Rabbit and a pick-up truck. The three-vehicle crash left 12 people injured and claimed the lives of two. This fatal Denver car accident occurred on Saturday, April 3, 2010 around 4:50 p.m.

Witnesses reported the Regional Transportation District bus was traveling north on Lincoln when it ran the red light at East Eighth Avenue. The bus slammed into the VW Rabbit first then continued into a pick-up truck, leaving it pinned against a steel pole.

Sadly, this deadly collision claimed the lives of a male driver and female passenger of the VW Rabbit. The two victims were in their late twenties and residents of Denver. The driver of the pick-up truck was transported by ambulance to a hospital and was last reported to be in serious condition.

The bus driver was injured, as well as 10 other passengers on the bus. They were taken to an unidentified hospital for treatment, and four remain in serious condition.

The investigation is underway to see if this accident could have been prevented. Police reported that there were many witnesses, as well as video of the Denver traffic accident that will explain what exactly happened. Investigators will determine if the driver of the bus will face charges.

Multiple Colorado Springs Car Accidents Leave Two Pedestrians Injured

Two Colorado Springs car accidents involving pedestrians occurred on Thursday evening, April 1, 2010. Both accounts of cars hitting pedestrians happened within two hours of each other.

A female pedestrian was hit by a pick-up truck just after 8 p.m. as she was walking on the Colorado College campus. A male driver struck her in the crosswalk at Cascade Avenue, north of Cache La Poudre Street, leaving her seriously injured. Police cited the driver for failure to yield to pedestrians.

The injured pedestrian was taken to the hospital and was admitted for serious head injuries. Her name was not released, but she was identified as a prospective college student.

The other incident involved a suspected hit-and-run accident which occurred at approximately 10 p.m. The accident occurred at the intersection of Cascade Avenue and Colorado Avenue.

Witnesses reported that an SUV hit a pedestrian crossing the street and left the scene. Although, the driver came back to the scene a short time later, he was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene following an accident involving injuries.

The driver was identified as Charles Irwin. Not only did he flee the scene, but police also processed him for driving under the influence.

The 37-year old pedestrian was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment. Thankfully, the injuries the victim sustained were not life threatening.

Denver Bus Driver Claims the Life of a Colorado Pedestrian

On April 5th at 5:40 p.m., a Colorado pedestrian was found lying in a gutter, in front of a bus stop in Aurora. The incident occurred near East Mississippi Avenue and South Peoria. Once rescuers arrived, they treated the victim’s injuries and transported him to a local hospital.

Sadly, the pedestrian died shortly after, as a result of his severe injuries. The victim was identified as a 78-year old male. Witnesses say the victim appeared to be a pedestrian who was ran over from a Denver Regional Transportation District bus, and provided police with the bus number.

Police found the bus on its route, and questioned the bus driver. The bus driver claimed he didn’t know he was involved in an accident; however, police found evidence of the accident on the outside of the bus. Police impounded the bus to review the evidence, as well as the on-board video.

Witnesses don’t know how the pedestrian ended up underneath the bus. The bus driver is cooperating with the investigation and has not been charged at this time. The investigation is still ongoing in an attempt to determine what exactly occurred.

12-year-old boy and uncle killed in crash

Newschannel 13 reports a 12-year-old boy and his uncle died in a multi-car wreck in Colorado Springs Thursday night in a 3-vehicle accident.

22-year-old Gregory Lee Johnson was driving with 12-year-old Josh Attardi around 6 p.m. when he lost control of his 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix at a turn at Palmer Park and Bula. The passenger side of the Pontiac hit a Nissan Pathfinder's front end, and one more car.

The driver the second vehicle, 40-year-old Christine Kaye Litchfield of Colorado Springs, was treated and released for neck strain.

The driver of third vehicle invovled in the crash, a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder, was 31 year old Nicole Walden of Colorado Springs. She was treated and released for facial contusions. Her passengers were 10-year-old Xavier Wright, who was treated and released for contusions, and 4-year-old Zaldon Gunn, who was not injured.

Police are investigating drug use as a possible cause of the accident.

Three injured in motorcyle accidents.

The Wet Mountain Tribune reports three persons were taken to area hospitals over the weekend following two separate motorcycle accidents along Highway 96.

Fred Dodd, 54, of Westcliffe, was riding a 1992 Harley Davidson when he lost control of the bike near the intersection of Highway 165. Mr. Dodd was ejected when the bike went off the right side of the road. Dodd is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities were called to the scene of an another accident near the intersection of Highway 96 and CR 387. Reportedly, Patrick Cokerham, 61, of Colorado Springs, was riding a 2003 Harley Davidson when he struck the rear of a 1995 Saturn being driven by Tatsue Maekawa, 47, of Pueblo. Maekawa was apparently trying to make a left turn onto CR 387.

Janet Webb, 62, of Colorado Springs, a passenger on the bike, sustained head injuries and was airlifted via Flight for Life to St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo.

Cokerham was transported via ambulance to an area hospital.

The condition of the two is unknown.

Five local teens and two younger children injured in 8-person crash

The Gazette reports five local teenagers, two 11-year old children, and one adult were injured on Powers Boulevard Friday night when a vehicle driven by Merrianne McDowell, 37, made an improper left turn in front of the teen's vehicle. Four of the five teens and one 11-year-old were not wearing seat belts.
