Say I am involved in a car crash in Colorado, and nobody knows yet who is at fault

Q: Say I am involved in a car crash in Colorado, and nobody knows yet who is at fault; who pays for the ambulance and emergency care?

A:

Effective January 1, 2009 Colorado law requires all insurance companies issuing auto insurance policies in the state to include a minimum amount of medical payment coverage.

This additional coverage, often called "Med-Pay," provides at least $5,000 to pay for immediate emergency transportation and medical help for the insured driver and passengers, regardless of who is at fault. Insurance companies will routinely offer coverage for higher amounts.

All insurance companies are now required to offer Med-Pay at the time of subscription or renewal, and may charge an additional premium depending on the insured limit. Consumers, however, have the opportunity to opt-out in writing confirming that they reject the additional coverage.

This law allows consumers to concentrate on recovery instead of worrying about the immediate bills to be paid. Of course, all vehicles in Colorado must carry insurance covering third party liability with minimum limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and a minimum of $15,000 for property damage.
