Is walking the most unsafe method of transportation?

According to a NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) study some 4,500 people are killed and 70,000 are injured in car-pedestrian accidents every year in this country. Looking at the average distances covered by all vehicles and by people on foot, the study concludes that whereas 11.4 percent of all traffic deaths are pedestrians, they account for only 8.6 percent of all trips.

The idea of a child, an elderly person, a distracted shopper, or a jogger hit by a car is heart-wrenching because the victim rarely escapes alive or without serious injuries. People in Colorado Springs may ask themselves: why are so many pedestrians hurt or killed by cars?

The NHTSA study makes some interesting points:

The times and days when pedestrians are more at risk of injury and at risk of death are not the same: pedestrian injuries mostly occur during the day, with a peak time between 3 and 6 pm, whereas fatalities happen more in the evening or at night. Most crashes occur on Fridays and Saturdays.

These patterns may appear because of different conditions. For instance, there is more traffic during the day, especially during the 3 to 6 pm peak hours, causing more accidents. More fatalities at night may be explained by a combination of drunken driving, drunken pedestrians and poor visibility.

The majority of pedestrian-vehicle accidents, 60 percent in urban areas and 67 percent in rural areas, occur at places other than intersections: this could indicate in urban areas a higher share of pedestrians at fault, and in rural areas an absence of safe sidewalks, but the study does not go into enough detail to make firm conclusions.

Alcohol is a major cause: drivers under the influence are responsible for 18 percent of pedestrian fatalities, but drunken pedestrians are even more frequently (32 percent) killed by cars.

Darkness accounts for almost half of the pedestrian fatalities: especially during winter time in the northern part of the country, as darkness falls when the commuter and pedestrian traffic is still dense, the lack of visibility is responsible for almost 50 percent of pedestrian fatalities.

Attorney Robert J. Anderson has helped the victims of pedestrian accidents and their families in El Paso, Denver and Douglas counties for several decades and knows how difficult it is to overcome the tragedy of death or severe injuries. In many cases, the accident is partly or entirely caused by the pedestrian and this may be an additional source of anxiety. Even so, a solution may be found to get compensation depending on the detailed circumstances of the accident.
