Prevent Colorado Dog Bites – Tips to properly bring a dog into your home

Most of the time, a dog attack in Colorado will take place in or around the home of the dog. If a person is bitten, it is important to let the dog’s owner know of the attack and to find out if the dog has been vaccinated.  If no information about the dog is known, the victim may need to get treated for rabies as a precaution. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says more than 50% of dog bites actually happen on the dog owner’s property, and the majority of people at risk are children ages five to nine years old. Also, people who own dogs in their homes are among one of the highest risk group for dog attacks. 

Unfortunately, studies show that adults with more than two dogs in their homes are five times more likely to obtain a dog bite than someone without dogs. This statistic is alarming since a large group in society own dogs and most would never think their dogs would bite them. 

There are several tips to learn before brining a dog into a home that may reduce the chances of being bitten:

• Consult a veterinarian or breeder to find out what type of dog fits best with your lifestyle and household.

• Spend time with the dog prior to rescuing or buying it.

• Find out if the dog has a history of aggressive behavior.

• Be careful to bring a dog into a home with a baby or toddler.

• If a child is in the home, introduce the two and watch for signs of fear or apprehension from the child.  If there are any cues of this nature, wait to bring a dog into your house.

Once you decide to adopt or buy a dog in Colorado, you should:

• Spay or neuter the dog

• Don’t leave children alone with the dog

• Don’t wrestle or be aggressive with the dog

• Train the dog to roll over and submit plus other submissive behaviors

• Seek advice from an animal behaviorist if your dog starts being aggressive
