Commerce City Police have identified a woman who was killed Aug. 19, 2010, in a roll-over accident as twenty-one-year old Yoana Rodriguez of Aurora, according to 9news.com. Rodriguez was driving northbound on Tower Road near 97th Avenue at around 5:00 a.m. when she encountered debris on the road, which she had to swerve around to avoid. The car veered to the right and rolled over. The young woman, who was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected and killed on the spot. A witness went to the car and rescued a two-year old child who was still strapped into a car seat. The little girl was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The witness later declared that that road is frequently littered with trash and debris, which drivers have to go around.
Attorney Robert J. Anderson expresses his deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the young mother, and is particularly saddened by this tragedy, which probably could have been avoided had the mother thought to buckle her own safety belt as she did for her little girl.
Once again drivers are reminded how a routine trip can have a nightmarish outcome when something totally unexpected like road debris comes up. Road accidents are sometimes caused by our own mistakes, but they can sometimes be caused by others. We can control our own mistakes—for instance, by buckling up and making sure children are always safely strapped into their seats, or by buying a safer car. And with experience we learn to anticipate as much as possible the mistakes of others and the unexpected obstacles we may encounter.
