The freedom of a biker stops at the bar

Ever since Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, riding a motorcycle on America’s roads has been the embodiment of freedom, to such an extent that hundreds of thousands of motorcycles now swarm the highways of Colorado. When the weather is good, many a Colorado driver in his insulated car will look with envy at the splendid, shining, powerful bikes. However, the car’s interior insulates those envious drivers not just from noise, smells, and climate, but also from the devastating effects of a crash.

Not being protected in the event of an accident is in itself a good reason for a Colorado motorcyclist not to drink alcohol. What is less well-known is that the risk of accident is much higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver with the same blood-alcohol content. Riding a bike requires a sharp sense of balance, and to keep the bike on the right course you will need super-fast and reflexes and excellent control. Motorcycles only have two wheels, and if one of them starts sliding in the midst of a brake or turn effort, loss of control is almost inevitable.

According to recent studies by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), 46 percent of all motorcyclists killed in crashes were using alcohol, and 25 percent of alcohol-related fatalities occur in single-vehicle accidents due to loss of control.

Many motorcycle accidents in Douglas, El Paso, and Denver counties, however, are caused by other vehicles, whose drivers are either distracted, drowsy, under the influence of alcohol, or just careless. Colorado Springs Personal Injury Attorney Robert J. Anderson has defended numerous victims of motorcycle crashes, earning the satisfaction and gratitude of his clients over several decades.
