After months of consumer complaints, car accidents in Colorado and nationwide and even several deaths, Toyota recalled certain models of vehicles in November 2009 for accelerator pedals sticking. Toyota believed it to be a problem with the design of the floor mats, and recommended drivers to remove floor mats from their cars as gas pedals were getting stuck under these poorly designed mats.
Although 5.4 million cars were recalled for the floor mat entrapment modification, there were still accounts of sticking gas pedals and involuntary acceleration. Because of the safety concern, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as Toyota investigated this matter again.
After this review, Toyota announced yet another recall in January 2010 focusing on potentially faulty accelerator pedals affecting 2.3 million cars. The following models were involved in the accelerator pedal recall:
certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
2009-2010 Matrix,
2005-2010 Avalon,
certain 2007-2010 Camry,
certain 2010 Highlander,
2007-2010 Tundra,
2008-2010 Sequoia
Recently, Toyota announced on May 4, 2010 that they have just completed three million recall remedies to vehicles that have been affected, including:
1.6 million vehicles fixed for the sticking accelerator pedal
1.5 million cars treated for the floor mat pedal entrapment issue
115,000 certain 2010 Prius and Lexus models updated for anti-lock brake system concerns
