Drivers, just like sailors, should know how to deal with bad weather

When you applied for a driver's license in Colorado, you probably took the road skills test under normal, if not ideal, weather conditions. Few people would challenge the DMV in a rainstorm or on ice-covered roads. Colorado drivers, in most cases, learn how to handle bad weather driving conditions "on the job." Experience is the way to learn, which means inexperienced drivers can make mistakes, and do.

In Colorado you could be faced with the most varied and extreme weather conditions:

ice and snowheavy or continuous rainfogsand and dust stormspowerful winds.

It is possible to compensate for a lack of experience with increased awareness and prudence. A few rules of common sense may be helpful, and could possibly save you material damage, serious injuries and even death:

Don't drive faster because other vehicles, even trucks, overtake you; drive at the speed you feel comfortable with;Don't overtake trucks when blinded by sprayed rainwater, stay behind and slow down to distance yourself; When approaching an obstacle on snow or ice, try first to gently swerve around or pull off without braking. Once you use the brakes, you can't turn. Use the brakes (if fitted with ABS) only when there is no other possibility; On mountainous terrain, you can drive faster uphill, because you need traction and you will be able to stop quickly if needed. Going downhill, drive very slowly for the opposite reasons;During rainstorms, if water isn't drained rapidly, ponding will result. Rushing into water at high speed will cause your car to decelerate brutally and/or hydroplane. Avoid ponds and slow down.Always ask yourself when faced with very poor visibility or slippery roads, if it is not better to pull over and stop rather than risk your life. What is more important: being late or dead?
