Lower your risk of a bicycle accident

You can drastically lower the risks of bicycle accidents by carefully choosing your itinerary.

Bicycle riders in Colorado Springs and elsewhere often feel uneasy in the midst of vehicles that could inflict them instant death or serious injuries at any time. The basic rules of safe bicycle riding in Colorado are well known:

Make sure others will see you: use a reflective jacket and head and rear lights.Make sure others hear you: use bell or horn, and yell if necessary.Make sure you hear the others: avoid headphones.Don't ride close to the curb: avoid opening doors, and see what's coming from the side street.Slow down or stop: each time you don't trust an approaching vehicle.Don't make a left turn without looking behind: look back and use a mirror, attached to the handlebars or to your helmet.Obey traffic rules and wear a helmet: even for short rides, always wear a helmet.

Even if you carefully follow these rules, you could still feel stressed by the proximity of so many vehicles and their often careless or distracted drivers. The solution? Go somewhere else!

You can use your bicycle for work, shopping or just for exercise. In all cases it is a healthy activity and even more enjoyable when you acquire the muscles and lungs to do it effortlessly.

This means you do not absolutely need to take the shortest way and you are not held to the shortest transit time. So why not lower your stress by choosing:

wider roadsback streetslow or slow traffic streets and highways

You can now plan your bicycle itinerary on Google. Go to Google Maps, choose Get Directions and enter your origin and destination points (location, not detailed address), and click on the Bicycle icon. Try it out.
