Ignorance of the law doesn’t stand up in court. Do you know the specific traffic rules for motorcycles in Colorado?

Knowing the traffic code is not just a matter of avoiding fines. Most of the code's statutes and regulations were made to protect bikers and their passengers from accidents, and to organize the traffic flow in an orderly manner. Some of the rules are specific to Colorado, and to motorcyclists.

These Colorado motorcycle specific rules - not applicable to motor driven bicycles of up to six brake-horsepower - can be summarized as follows:

Riding on motorcycles: Ride only on the permanent and regular seat of your bike, and do not carry more passengers than can ride on a second seat at the back and/or in another seat in an attached side or rear car. It is forbidden to carry packages or any object preventing the driver from keeping both hands on the handlebar.

Operating motorcycles: A motorcycle is entitled to the full use of a traffic lane. However, a maximum of two motorcycles may ride abreast in the same lane. You cannot overtake or pass in the same lane as the vehicle being overtaken. You are also forbidden to ride your motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.

Head lamps: The motorcycle must be fitted with at least one, but not more than two head lamps in compliance with specific position, power and beam regulations.

Rear lamps: Your bike must be fitted with a white lamp to illuminate the license plate, a separate red tail lamp and a reflector, all placed and constructed according to specific regulations. The lamps must be so wired as to be lighted whenever the head lamps are lighted.

Stop lamps and turn signals: One rear red stop lamp as well as a pair of front (white) and rear (red) turn signals must further complete the equipment of your motorcycle.

Clinging: A motorcyclist is not allowed to grab onto another motorcycle or vehicle to be towed.

Safety equipment: You are not allowed to operate your motorcycle without wearing eyeglasses or goggles with lenses made of safety glass or plastic. Passengers not in a sidecar or enclosed cab must have their feet positioned on footrests. And helmets are mandatory for bikers and their passengers aged less than 18 years.
